Through our unique dental alliance model, USAble Life helps our partners optimize their dental businesses by bringing deep expertise backed by many years of dental-focused experience. Our dental leadership is not only highly experienced in building and operating profitable dental blocks — they’re also thought leaders at the forefront of medical-dental integration and driving improved overall health for Blue Cross and Blue Shield members.
Two of these leaders — Ed Murphy, executive vice president, dental, and Sol Brotman, vice president, national clinical operations — recently made news by taking prestigious roles within the Santa Fe Group, the preeminent dental think tank in the U.S., of which USAble Life’s parent company, Life and Specialty Ventures (LSV) is a member.
The Santa Fe Group is committed to improving lives through oral health. Their goal is to promote thought and action to address important social and health equity issues centered around dental care. The group has been instrumental in moving the needle on medical-dental integration, as well as other critical matters, including oral cancer, dental education, children’s oral health, and expanding oral health care for seniors.
Ed Murphy was tapped to serve on the group’s Strategic Advisory Council, which is comprised of deans and emeritus deans of the nation’s leading universities of dental medicine, CEOs, and other C-suite level leaders. The council helps shape the policies and strategic direction of the group and promote important enhancements in health care.
Given his background and accomplishments, Murphy is a natural fit for the council. Since joining LSV and USAble Life, he has overseen the development and advanced the adoption of LSV’s innovative medical-dental integration programs — Dental4Health® and LSV Connected Care® ― which improve overall health while driving down health care costs for enrolled plan members.
Before joining LSV, Murphy was an established industry trailblazer and transformative leader. He co-founded Dental Benefit Providers and later served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare Group’s Specialized Care Services division. He also co-founded Preventive Medicine, a health informatics company that developed a proprietary health and behavioral change model based on e-learning technology. He is a longtime board member of the National Association of Dental Plans, serving as its chair for three years.
Murphy’s not the only LSV team member helping to transform dental and health care at the Santa Fe Group. Recently, Sol Brotman was chosen as Senior Scholar for the organization.
Senior Scholars act as subject matter experts to help support the Santa Fe Group’s reach and goals. Brotman’s knowledge and insight enrich the group’s thought leadership and help drive action in the oral health community about timely health issues.
Brotman also serves on the board of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Oral Health Initiative. He was chair of the Florida Board of Dentistry and previously dental director for Florida Combined Life Insurance Company Inc. He earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Maryland, a certificate in comprehensive dentistry from the University of Florida, and a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry.
Ed Murphy and Sol Brotman represent the caliber of expertise you’ll find at USAble Life. They help lead a high-performing team of dental industry veterans who have partnered with multiple Blue plans over the years to increase the performance of their dental businesses. At the same time, they’ve continued to introduce programs that drive medical-dental integration and improve health outcomes for Blue members. This team of industry thought leaders are ready to connect with you and devise a winning strategy for your dental business. Let’s start a conversation.
